Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust was formed in 2023 by bringing together the former St Helens and Knowsley and Southport and Ormskirk hospital trusts. Around 11,000 staff provide care from Whiston, Southport, St Helens, Ormskirk and Newton hospitals, community locations and patients' homes.
Emergency and maternity services operate at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk, with medical, surgical, diagnostic and planned care distributed across the hospital network. Adult community services support St Helens and West Lancashire, while Newton Hospital provides inpatient rehabilitation. The Trust also runs the Mersey Regional Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston and the regional spinal injuries centre at Southport, serving more than four million people across the North West and neighbouring areas.
