About NHS England Care Identity Management
NHS England Care Identity Management is the national service used to create verified Care Identities and manage access to clinical systems and patient information. Registration Authority staff, sponsors and identity checkers can associate a person's identity with the health and care organisations for which they work, then assign appropriate permissions. The service also manages authentication tokens used for multifactor authentication, including smartcard-related functions and self-service authenticator management. A reusable verified identity can reduce repeated checks when roles change. Care Identity Management provides national identity and access administration, but application permissions still require correct role design, sponsorship, timely removal and local governance to maintain least-privilege access.
