South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust provides emergency ambulance care across 10,000 square miles—around one fifth of mainland England. Its area covers Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Bristol and the former Avon area, serving more than 5.5 million residents and millions of annual visitors.
Nearly 6,000 staff operate from more than 90 ambulance stations, two emergency operations centres and two Hazardous Area Response Teams, managing around one million incidents a year. The trust serves both remote rural communities and major urban centres, creating distinctive seasonal and geographical demands. It also supplies clinical teams to four regional air-ambulance charities and works with hundreds of community responders and other volunteers to extend emergency coverage.
